During this time of year, we are successible to cold and flu viruses, including COVID19! We have to fight these viruses and armor up our immune system for a healthier life.
Herbs for Defense:
Astragalus: Protects the immune system and promotes healing within the body (do not use if fever is present)
Black Cherry: Rich in antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory benefits (should not be used during pregnancy)
Ginger: Fights inflammation (not recommended for people who take anticoagulants or have gallstones; not recommended for extended use during pregnancy)
Mushrooms (maitake, shiitake, and reishi): Stimulates immune cells
Olive Leaf extract: Enhances immune function and fights all types of infections
Herbs for Relief:
Pau d’arco: Fights bacterial and viral infections
Goldenseal: Fights infection and inflammation (do not take internally on a daily basis for more than a week at a time; do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding)
Echinacea: Fights inflammation, bacterial and viral infections and enhances your immune system (do not take for more than 3 months at a time)
Yarrow tea: Reduces fever and other common cold symptoms
Bonset: Expectorant and eliminator of mucus (do not use on a daily basis for more than a week)
Cayenne: Helps keep mucus flowing, aiding in preventing congestion and headaches
Elderberry: Its antiviral properties reduces flu symptoms as well as combating free radicals and inflammation (should not be used during pregnancy)
Eucalyptus oil: Relieves congestion (external use only)
Fenugreek: Breaks up phlegm and mucus
Slippery elm: Removes phlegm and mucus from the body
Linden-flower tea: Suppresses cough and reduces fever
Wild pansy tea: Treats colds with fever and respiratory congestion
For children:
Echinacea and Goldenseal combo: An alcohol-free extract is recommended; 4-6 drops of the combination extract in water or juice every four hours for three days.
Catnip tea and Lobelia tincture: To reduce a fever, take catnip tea enemas and 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon lobelia tincture ever three to four hours until fever drops.
